Fence cost per foot in Louisville, by material
These are installed prices, materials and labor, from what we quote Louisville homeowners today. They’re ranges because no two yards are the same. Where your fence lands in each range depends on grade, access, gate count and whether an old fence has to come out.
| Fence type | Per linear foot, installed | Typical 200 ft project | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wood (treated pine) | $20–$35 | $4,000–$7,000 | Full privacy at the lowest wood price |
| Wood (cedar) | $25–$45 | $5,000–$9,000 | Full privacy. Naturally rot-resistant and takes stain well |
| Aluminum | $25–$40 | $5,000–$8,000 | Pools, open views, HOA-friendly, near-zero maintenance |
| Vinyl | $35–$65 | $7,000–$13,000 | Privacy without staining or sealing |
| Chain link | $20–$30 | $4,000–$6,000 | Pet containment on a budget |
| Picket | $20–$30 | $4,000–$6,000 | Front yards and curb appeal |
| Composite | $50–$130 | $10,000–$26,000 | Wood look, longest life, highest upfront cost |
Installed prices from Miles Fence, October 2026. The low end is simple chain link on a flat, open yard; the high end is luxury composite with several gates on a difficult site.
A typical Louisville backyard
What 200 feet of fence costs
A typical backyard project we quote runs about 200 linear feet. Here is that same yard in each of the common materials, with the middle of each range as a single number to plan around.
| 200 ft backyard | Price range | Plan around |
|---|---|---|
| Treated pine privacy | $4,000–$7,000 | ~$5,500 |
| Cedar privacy | $5,000–$9,000 | ~$7,000 |
| Aluminum | $5,000–$8,000 | ~$6,500 |
| Vinyl privacy | $7,000–$13,000 | ~$10,000 |
| Chain link | $4,000–$6,000 | ~$5,000 |
“Plan around” is the middle of each range. Footage moves the number most: 100–150 ft comes in at roughly half to three-quarters of these figures, and 300 ft or more runs about half again as much.

What moves the price
Nine things that change a fence quote
Footage and material set the starting point. These are the things that move a quote up or down from there.
How much fence you need
Total footage drives the price first and foremost. Every foot needs its share of posts, rails and boards or panels, plus the labor to set them.
Slope and grade
A hillside costs more than a flat yard. On a slope the fence either follows the ground or steps down it in level sections, and both take longer than a flat run.
Rock
Eastern Jefferson County has plenty of rock, and it slows post holes down. What’s under your yard decides how fast every hole goes.
How the posts are set
Most posts go in the ground. Surface-mounting, or mounting on a patio or retaining wall, changes the cost.
Height and finish
Taller fences use more material per foot. A top board or cap on a privacy fence adds a finished look and adds to the price.
Customizations
Decorative tops, mixed materials and anything built to order cost more than a standard style.
Gates
How many gates, how wide, and whether any of them are driveway gates. Each one is priced on its own.
Removing an old fence
Tearing out and hauling away an existing fence is part of the job, and always part of your estimate.
Access
Whether equipment can get into the backyard. A wide side yard is quick; a narrow gap between houses adds time.
HOA rules and permits can shape the fence too. Some HOAs require architectural committee approval before work begins, so check with yours first. Most residential fences in Louisville, Kentucky do not need a permit; when one is needed, we make sure your fence complies and work with you to get it. See our Louisville fence permit guide for height limits and city-by-city rules.

Gates
Gates are priced one by one
Each gate takes its own posts, hinges, latch and labor, so it’s priced separately from the run of fence. The price depends on how many gates you need, how wide they are, and whether any of them are driveway gates.
Most backyards need at least one walk gate. A driveway needs a double gate wide enough for a car or mower. Our shop welds and fabricates custom gates in house, so an unusual size doesn’t mean waiting on a supplier.

Cost over time
The cheapest fence to install isn’t always the cheapest to own
Wood costs less upfront and can be stained any color, but it needs resealing every few years to handle our wet springs. Vinyl costs more at the start, never needs staining and won’t rot. Aluminum needs almost no maintenance at all.

Before you call
How to get an accurate fence quote
A per-foot range gets you in the ballpark. A real quote needs someone to walk the fence line. Having these ready makes the estimate faster and more accurate.
- Your property lines. A survey or plat from your closing papers is best. The county property map is a rough guide, not a survey.
- Your HOA rules, if you have an HOA: allowed heights, materials, colors and the approval process.
- Where you want gates, and how wide. Think about mowers, trailers and trash cans.
- What the fence is for. Privacy, a pool, a dog that digs or jumps, or curb appeal all point to different fences.
Comparing quotes? Check that each one covers the same footage, height and material, the same gates, old fence removal and cleanup. A low number that leaves out removal or gates isn’t a lower price.
